What are EMFs?

EMF stands for electromagnetic field. EMFs can be naturally occurring, such as electromagnetic fields from the Earth and sun, or non-native, meaning they are produced by man-made electrical and wireless technologies. Around the home, non-native electromagnetic fields can come from sources such as electrical wiring and appliances, power lines, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and mobile communications. EMFs can be broadly considered across three areas: electric fields, magnetic fields and radiofrequency (RF) fields.

Non-native electromagnetic fields, or NNEMFs, come from sources such as electrical wiring, appliances, mobile devices, Wi-Fi and telecommunications infrastructure. Exposure varies according to factors including frequency, distance, duration and power level.

Heat and energy absorption

Radiofrequency electromagnetic energy can be absorbed by the body. At sufficiently high exposure levels it can heat biological tissue, which is why Australian and international exposure standards include limits designed to prevent harmful heating effects.

Some research has explored possible relationships between electromagnetic field exposure and areas such as sleep, behaviour, neurological function and wellbeing. Findings vary, and these potential effects remain areas of ongoing scientific investigation.

Researchers continue to investigate whether different forms and levels of electromagnetic field exposure may influence neurological, reproductive or metabolic processes. Current evidence has not established that everyday wireless exposure below recognised safety limits causes these effects.

Laboratory studies have examined whether electromagnetic fields can influence processes such as oxidative stress, calcium signalling and cellular function. Results are mixed, and the significance of these findings for everyday human exposure remains uncertain.

Wi-Fi exposure

Wi-Fi uses low-power radiofrequency electromagnetic energy. Although some studies have investigated possible biological effects, Australian health authorities state that there is currently no substantiated evidence of adverse health effects from Wi-Fi exposure below established safety limits.

5G exposure

5G also uses non-ionising radiofrequency electromagnetic energy. Research into long-term exposure continues, but ARPANSA states that current evidence does not substantiate adverse health effects from 5G exposure when levels remain within Australian safety standards.

Mobile phones and health

Mobile phone exposure has been extensively studied. IARC classifies radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as “possibly carcinogenic to humans,” reflecting limited evidence rather than proof of causation. Large epidemiological studies have generally not demonstrated a clear increase in brain cancer risk from mobile phone use.

How can we reduce NNEMF exposure?

Reducing exposure to non-native electromagnetic fields (NNEMFs) often starts with identifying the sources in your environment and increasing distance from them where practical. In many situations, even small changes to the location of electrical equipment, wireless devices or frequently used spaces can reduce exposure.

Where distance alone is not practical, other options may include changing how equipment is used, replacing wireless connections with wired alternatives, isolating selected circuits or introducing suitable shielding solutions.

Depending on the source and the individual property, practical options may include:

  • Increasing distance from electrical equipment and identified field sources
  • Shielding or rerouting electrical cables where appropriate
  • Installing isolation switches for selected electrical circuits, either manually operated or timer controlled
  • Reviewing the location of beds, desks and frequently occupied areas in relation to electrical infrastructure
  • Installing suitable barriers or shielding where required
  • Assessing high-field electrical equipment and considering practical alternatives where appropriate

Radiofrequency sources can include Wi-Fi routers, Bluetooth devices, smart meters, mobile phones and other wireless technologies. Options for reducing exposure may include:

  • Increasing distance from wireless devices and routers
  • Relocating Wi-Fi equipment away from bedrooms and frequently occupied areas
  • Installing isolation switches or timers for selected wireless equipment
  • Replacing Wi-Fi connections with hardwired LAN or data cabling where practical
  • Turning off wireless functions on devices when they are not required
  • Reducing unnecessary use of Bluetooth and other wireless connections
  • Considering appropriate shielding for specific sources, such as smart meters, following assessment
